Sextortion

Sextortion is a form of online blackmail where offenders trick or coerce someone into sending sexual images of themselves, before threatening to share the images unless their demands are met. These demands could be for money, more graphic content or sexual favours.

In more recent times, sextortion has also included the use of dating apps to gain trust and then having the victim share personal sensitive information which is then later used against them in some malicious way, usually blackmail.

The sharing of explicit photos 'sexting - adult term' or 'send nudes - the teenage term' has become widespread with recent studies finding that 85% of teenagers 14-18 had received some form of explicit content and 70% of this same demographic stating they had sent explicit content. The distribution of these images is illegal in Australia under child pyrography laws. Although age appropriateness could be and has been argued recently, it is still illegal in Australia. The more dangerous element of this whole issue is the adult child-preditor who is actively seeking these images.
